Bathroom Stalls

So, about a month ago I decided to ask my fellow users of the ladies' washroom why they aren't feminists as a tribute to whoever wrote "Why Aren't U A Feminist?" on the UC sign in October.

I got some interesting responses:

1. "Because I Don't Have A Superiority Complex"

- because feminists are less worried about equal rights and obviously focused on how much better they are than everybody else? really?

2. "Because I'm an Equalist, Feminism is a Glorification and Favouritism of Women"

- I'm just wondering how feminism is not about equality and is in fact about glorification and favouritism. But there were some responses to this one

3. "Why aren't you a social activist? A humanitarian? It's a stupid question we aren't a lot of things that we probably should be. One cause is not more right than another, you stick with yours I'll stick with mine, don't patronize others, it won't get you anywhere"

- Ok, so like I said, why aren't you a feminist? It's not a stupid question, I'm not patronizing, I'm just asking.

What we can learn from this experiment is that a lot of people seem a little confused as to what feminism is. It is not about female superiority, it is not about glorifying or favouring women, it is about equality. Not simply equality of the sexes, feminism as a mindset allows for a more considerate, interdisceplinary consideration of privelege and power.
