excerpt from YUULA BENIVOLSKI blog

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2010
Two days ago I went for a snowy island jog and it was magic. While I ran snowflakes fell onto my face and melted and the lake looked turquoise or silver like an ocean in the winter or something but it was half frozen and icicles covered the breakwater boulders. It sounds cheesy but it made me feel so happy! I listened to the Knife and ran as fast as I could on the boardwalk and felt like I was on some sort of a deserted island (uuuuh..) what's up with this place?! Jeez. One day more people are going to find out about the island and then what?

Shary Boyle

Shary Boyle currently lives and works in Toronto, though her career has involved travel and residencies in several European countries. She is well-known for her bold, fantastical explorations of the figure. Highly crafted and deeply imaginative, her multi-disciplinary practice mines the history of porcelain figurines, animist mythologies and historical portraiture to create a symbolic language uniquely her own. From sculpture to performance Boyle interprets her personal observations of sexuality, relationships and human vulnerability through a darkly feminist lens. She is the winner of the 2009 Iskowitz Award and her work is exhibited and collected internationally. Boyle also collaborates with musicians, creating "live" drawings, which are animated and projected onstage during their performances. She has worked with Peaches at the Sonic Youth-curated All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Los Angeles and performed in 2005 with Feist at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris.

Boyle is an interdisciplinary artist who moves freely between drawing, painting, sculpture, audio-visual performance, and installations. She draws upon ancient mythology, fiction, and fantasy in an exploration of psychological and emotional conditions.

The Whispering Room

"Throughout the exhibition space are sixteen small bare audio speakers mounted on metal stands. The lighting is low. From each speaker a female voice is heard, sometimes conversing with another, describing events or actions from various viewpoints; observational, experiential, past, present, or future, in twenty to forty second segments. Each speaker plays a different dialogue. The story is unraveled by the way the listener moves from speaker to speaker through the space. Breaking into the atmosphere of quiet voices is an image projected onto the wall from a l6mm film projector. A film loop of a girl tap-dancing in the forest plays for 30 seconds and then shuts off."
- Cardiff

This is at the AGO right now - you should experience it!

taking stock of the good things in life

THE GOOD THINGS IN LIFE // SUMMER

Midnight bonfire on a sandy beach
Watching a pink sunrise while lying on the pier
Communal breakfasts, dinners, snacks and smoke breaks, communal everything!
Being barefoot all the time
So much productivity that you nearly lose your mind
Waking up to birds singing outside
Wild hair
Feeling inspired all the time
White wine in my studio while listening to Bruce Springsteen
Watching the sun set over Etobicoke from the rocky point on the south shore
Hoola hoops
Morning sex in hot weather with the fan blowing at us from the corner by the window
A healthy work schedule for myself and others
Gardening
Girl packs walking together in search of damage after a really bad storm
My girl pack
Eating food straight from the fire like little savages
Catching wild animals doing private things (like cleaning their babies, not having sex, you pervert!)
Singing loudly to myself while bike riding in the dark from Ward's ferry docks
When making things at any given moment becomes second nature
Nudity among friends
The Lighthouse ghost
Grilled cheese and coffee at the marina
Kissing on a picnic bench
Watching the moon rise
Fire, Whiskey and Sun
